  • Second Echo Ensemble Presents [In]Security:

A bent Kabarett. A bar. Behind the scenes, and on the stage. Aging divas go head to head conjuring moments where love, life and sex meet death, rejection and failure. All of this in a raucous evening of unapologetic dance, splintering theatre and life affirming performance art.

The DIVAS: Dr Hedley has worked the streets as a performance artist from Lymington to Berlin. Kenneth has been playing the double bass in big orchestras since 1976. Jane is dancing with legs that have been insured by Lloyds of London.

On a good night you might see Hedley strip, Kenneth take on Bach, and Jane smoulder her way through a show tune. Through the truth-telling prism of performance art they deliver a scorching, uncompromising manifesto on relevance.

  • DJ. Digger. Promotor.

Master of the dark arts, DJ Pressed has more wax than Madam Tussauds. His influences stem from the Jamaican sound system culture, 1990s big beat, the bliss of a jazz club dance floor and a post rave chill room. Sounds like brooding beats with ephemeral layered tapestries. DJ Pressed journeys through trip hop to drum and bass and stops along abstract hip hop, dub, liquid dnb, big beat, tech funk, and breaks. He's at home mixing elegant melancholic to organ shaking bass.

Over the years DJ Pressed has supported: DJ Nu Mark, DJ Yoda, Plump DJs, The Freestylers, Stanton Warriors, Meat Katie, Deekline, Krafty Kuts, Godlands, Aqusky, Rennie Pilgrem, Freq Nasty, Demuja, Smithmonger, Greg Packer,Triple Js The Funk Trust DJs etc.

With a fine art background being tactile is in his blood. There is a ritual act of playing an actual object and tangibly manipulating it. Mixing records adds a dynamic live and fluid element. DJ Pressed incorporates a third turntable, a theremin, drum machine, and FX units.

Like your hopes and dreams. The beats will be broken.

Since then she has held exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Christchurch, and an online exhibition at Chasm Gallery in New York. In 2014 she was awarded a two-month Moya Dyring residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris. In 2019 she was the recipient of SHOTGUN8, a mentorship program supported by Contemporary Art Tasmania, MONA and Detatched.

Her work explores the unification of sculpture collage and installation, sampling images of geological formations, waves and clouds. Through the use of erasure, fragmentation and assemblage she uses a sequence of symbolic arrangements. The work is explicitly elemental, offering an aesthetic response to the juncture between natural beauty and fragility and testing the boundaries between the romantic and the surreal.

Each project she creates is based on a specific local environment. She incorporates images, minerals and forms found in the specific areas of interest. Previous projects have been generated from both natural and human made geological formations including at defunct mining settlement Queenstown, Tasmania and silver mining village Zeehan. Inspiration has also been drawn from Icelandic lava fields, calcium carbonate structures at Lake Mungo (NSW) and the mesas of Utah.

  • People say that the most amazing electronic sound that someone will ever hear, is the sound of a robot having an orgasm. Second only to this is the sweet sound that Finch puts in your ears.

Music connoisseurs and party goers alike have often referred to his DJ sets as

"decent", "pretty good", or"something that people listen to".

If you ask Finch who his influences in the industry are, he will list people like "that DJ who played that one song that time in the club", or "God, because he invented sound".

Finch does not like to pigeonhole himself to playing just one style of music, but if you had to give it a name, it would be something like "Vengaboys, but slower, and no vocals, and sounds a bit like a washing machine doing the heavy cycle... like pots and pans, and stuff".

One thing is for certain however, every time Finch hits the stage, he will take your ears on a magical journey of unicorns, rainbows and dolphins, and possibly sea turtles too.

  • Holly Greaves is a multidisciplinary artist born and based in lutruwita/Tasmania. Her practice revolves around vulnerable and intimate circumstances, that she typically feels within abject-mundane objects and spaces.

Greaves’ art practice incorporates methods that enable her to engage with her fascination for subtle traces of effect and affect in the world. She is drawn to the uncontrived quality of inadvertent frottages and indices.

Greaves works across, whilst simultaneously tests the boundaries of disciplines including drawing, performance, sculpture and installation. She is interested in learning the emotional histories of places and things, not by working in response to them, but by working with them.

  • Underneath the shadows of kunanyi, South Hobart jangle/dream-pop trio, INTERIORS, weave intricate, lush melodies in a reverberant sea. With all three members contributing their voices and a twelve-string guitar at their disposal, they’ve taken inspiration from bands such as Cocteau Twins, Rowland S Howard and The Go-Betweens to create expansive songs of transience. INTERIORS are Adam-Carl D'Andrea (drums/vocals), Chris Wessing (guitar/vocals) and Percy Church (bass/vocals).

Not a supergroup, but featuring founding members of nipaluna/Hobart based bands Heart Beach, Quivers, All Fires and Enola Fall, INTERIORS latest single, Sue, is 4 minutes of unabashed jangle-pop lurking in the same abrasive depths as Rowland S Howard, with the pop sensibility of mid-80s Flying Nun, Sarah Records and Cherry Red compilations. Featuring Claire McCarthy (Pretty In Pink, Heart Beach) on backing vocals, the track is already a live favourite and the first to display the bands guy/girl harmonies that will feature prominently on their upcoming debut album. Recorded entirely by the band themselves and mastered by the venerable Mikey Young, the single features two other non-album tracks Spritzers & Shandies and Crash.

  • Jed Appleton cuts a cinematic and isolated figure on a cavernous stage, his performance bleeds with emotion, vacillating between longing and rage, with moments even ominous in tone, alongside sharp, harsh strumming reminiscent of an Irish murder ballad. Appleton sinks into his guitar and rocks back and forth so violently he seems set to launch off the stage, best described as a beautiful exorcism. Jed has shared the stage with the likes of Passenger, The Wombats, Matt Corby, The Cat Empire, Julien Baker (Boygenius), Sons of The East, Stu Larsen and performed at major festivals including Falls Festival, Panama & Party in the Paddock.

  • Julia is an emerging artist in lutruwita (Tasmania). Her practice consists of acrylic and mixed-media paintings. Julia’s artworks begin with a single source of inspiration – such as a colour, mark, or words. This is built upon intuitively, with each new addition to the canvas informing the next mark or brushstroke. Multiple layers build upon each other, changing and developing until a figure or narrative emerges, driving the direction of the finished piece.

Due to the use of defining mediums, artworks in 'The Light Within' become luminous under a black light, unlocking an additional perspective and igniting elements that are not initially obvious. Viewers are invited to drop in, enjoy a wine and explore these rich and vibrant works. Hand-held UV devices will be provided.

This is Julia’s second solo exhibition with Bickerstaff Blizzard following a successful first show in 2022.

His thoughtfully curated collection spans three decades of electronica, taking in the ever-evolving genres of house, techno, ambient and experimental music.

Taking influences from Detroit to Romania, his interpretation of subterranean sounds is as considered as the precision in his mixes, which often traverse the darker end of the sonic spectrum.

Expect a "timeless" tapestry of textural sounds; sleek minimal house, moody breakbeats and brooding techno delivered effortlessly.

  • Lucy creates ‘Witch Bop’ improvised sets using voice, fiddle, midi, and Ableton.

Aurally, Layers are built up and can start with any element, sometimes a percussive plucked melody, sometimes a vocal idea that gets looped while harmonies are added, and sometimes a midi synth pad or other digital instruments.

  • Nic Malouf is a Rock n Roll bred artist with roots in Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania. His versatility has lent itself to touring the world as an instrumentalist and has played in a huge variety of bands all around Australia. But his power is in his songwriting. He’s the kind of rare breed that shows a mastery and authenticity like nothing else. Songs that are at once harmonic and jarring, they oscillate seamlessly through genre - his voice a tender tone above the richness of music he produces, woven like an elaborate piece of patchwork. With a lick of sarcasm and words that scream experience - the world he introduces is deep and dark.
