Fireflies - Flow & Fire performance

We are a local fire and flow arts group based in lutuwitra / Tasmania that embraces the core values of creating community, inspiring creativity, and passing on knowledge.

Through our fiery dance of performance and flow, our hope is to inspire individuals and ignite a sense of wonder. We embrace the playful and adventurous nature of our inner youth, to entice creative expression.

Together we create an environment that is warm and welcoming to all, regardless of age, skill or background, and hold space for anyone to participate and get amongst the flames we conjure.

From a spark, to an ember, to a bright flame, we stoke the burning passion within ourselves, our community, and the many that came before us. We are the Hobart Fireflies!

Light Within | Julia Garry Exhibition (15th - 24th June)

The Light Within | Julia Garry

15 June – 1 July

Thursday + Friday 2-8, Saturday 10-2

Julia is an emerging artist in lutruwita (Tasmania). Her practice consists of acrylic and mixed-media paintings. Julia’s artworks begin with a single source of inspiration – such as a colour, mark, or words. This is built upon intuitively, with each new addition to the canvas informing the next mark or brushstroke. Multiple layers build upon each other, changing and developing until a figure or narrative emerges, driving the direction of the finished piece.

Due to the use of defining mediums, artworks in 'The Light Within' become luminous under a black light, unlocking an additional perspective and igniting elements that are not initially obvious. Viewers are invited to drop in, enjoy a wine and explore these rich and vibrant works. Hand-held UV devices will be provided.

This is Julia’s second solo exhibition with Bickerstaff Blizzard following a successful first show in 2022.

Burlesque and Bands

Burlesque + Bands @ The Grand Poobah

14th June, 2023 // 6.30pm - 11pm

Dark Fringe is excited to present an evening of Burlesque and Live Music at the infamous Grand Poobah. This evening will take you on a journey of divine feminine creative expression. There will be rhinestones, whips and melodies to make you swoon.

In a world hungry for authenticity and unapologetic self-expression, The Glitter Resistance stands as a rhinestoned bastion of creative resistance. Prepare to be enthralled, captivated, and forever transformed by an intoxicating blend of sensuality, wit and artistic brilliance.

The self-proclaimed demon creature Pip Serpentina will weave a tale of light and darkness, converging to create a visceral and haunting experience, where laughter dances with the shadows.

To round out an eclectic evening of performance, Port Wine and Babylon howl will grace the stage with their carefully crafted lyricism and powerhouse vocals. Both bands hail from the southern lands of lutruwita/Tasmania.

Port Wine is a 5 piece original performance enriched with sounds of heavy soul and blues, taking influence from rock with glimmers of funk and alternative jazz.

Babylon Howl, noted as Hobart’s ladies of rock, will bring a vintage rock sound with ribbons of crushing psychedelic elements to their original garage rock creations.

Exposed Transaction (12th - 13th June)

Exposed Transaction is a performative artwork that will see the artist Candice Broderick commit to an intensive immersion of creative practice in a public space.

“Our private spaces in life are our safety nets, they catch us when we fall providing a soft place to land. At the end of a long day, we return to the nest that we weave for ourselves to let the stresses of society melt away. The spaces that we inhabit shape who we are as people, they provide room for reflection and development.

We enter these spaces quietly, moving through seas of emotions with mouse like agility. What I am interested in knowing is who are we in these spaces and how do we behave when we think no one is watching?

The paradox that I have created in developing this artwork is that for the time that I am immersed in Exposed Transaction, the normally private spaces of my art studio and bedroom will cease to be private. I am putting myself on display; removing the screen of privacy and opening the door to analysis. Like a petri dish of bacteria under a microscope ready for inspection.”

The artist invites you to engage with this performance. Stop by the gallery, say hello and have a chat.

This will be the first iteration of Exposed Transaction: The Daily Life Of An Artist and Broderick is proud to deliver this performance in association with Bickerstaff Blizzard and the inaugural Dark Fringe Festival.

A series as personal tests of vulnerability.

Blurring the boundaries between internal and external spaces.

Find Yumemi through the shop window of Somewhere Coffee Bar in the organic process of self-reflection, examining the current state of her relationship to herself and her cultural heritage.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Yumemi Hiraki is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in nipaluna. Her practice delves into the intimate interactions between memory, nostalgia, cultural practice and an emotional responses to site. Viewing herself as a resident of cultural gaps, her works evokes a familiar yet foreign sense of longing, belonging and holding on, while hinting at life’s inevitable continuity and ephemerality. Her works lend themselves to being personal interventions of vulnerability, confrontation and reflection, that long to connect with a deeper sense of self.

Emergency Dollhouse

to 25 Jun

Emergency Dollhouse

  • 53 Collins Street Hobart, TAS, 7000 Australia (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The greatest darkness can often be concealed by an astonishing colour palette of pinks, reds and gold

The EMERGENCY DOLLHOUSE opens every evening, 6-10pm from Fri 9th- Sunday 25th June across 17 days in the centre of Hobart. It occupies four levels and 800 m2 of a large, astounding 200-year-old Georgian building in the heart of Hobart - with a multi-roomed sandstone basement. The Preview Night is a separate event from the following 16 nights due to ticketing requirements.

You're able to select a journey timeslot from 6-7 pm, 7-8pm, 8-9pm or 9-10pm. In general, the experience will take one hour.

Dolly is one of the nine characters who are residents of the life-size. Dolly's dollhouse agenda won’t be clear to begin with, but she’s wanting to convert you.

From the moment you enter triage you'll be captured and absorbed by this one-in-a-lifetime experience. You can't just be a voyeur. You must be a participant in the life-size dollhouse with its characters and emergencies.

"The world makes madwomen. The least you can do is be truly exposed."

Created and produced by Sabio & Male. Featuring performers from Sydney to Hobart, some with national exposure and national awards, will be revealed over the course of the next 4 to 5 weeks.

1 hr of immersion

3 very different phases in the journey

800m2 of levels & basements

Demolishing borders between the uncanny and fabulism, off-kilter contemporary and gothic darkness, the grotesque and the sanitised, this world premiere of the Emergency Dollhouse was designed specifically for the building and its temporary availability.

With style, rage & humour two of the most profound feminine archetypes will confront you and each other. In an electric and provocative debut to Dark Fringe, Sabio & Male shape a startling experience that maps a world taken over by masquerades, hidden agendas, and the characters of two women torn asunder by their extraordinary circumstances; Dolly and the Holy Mother.

Sabio & Male created the original world design, character profiles and audience experience design for the remarkable, idiosyncratic Emergency Dollhouse that covers both universal themes and deep personal experiences while being strongly, uniquely antipodean.

The design artist Sabio, has created award-winning costumes, sets and work that has appeared in the Sydney Opera House and many other venues. Sabio has also been commissioned for Marina Abramovic exhibitions and for film & TV projects such as The Nightingale, The Kettering Incident, Rosehaven and many other productions. David Male has received directing awards in New York and national digital awards in Australia.

Over the course of the project's development, since January 2022, Sabio was diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer. Through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment Sabio has created astounding work for the Emergency Dollhouse. $5 from each ticket is being donated to the Menzies Medical Research Centre relating to a particular area of breast cancer designated by Sabio.

More than an escape room. More than traditional theatre. More real than any bad dream or virtual reality world could possibly be. You'll be triaged like in a hospital, and then your journey truly begins.

Approx 100 people each hour are able to travel through the Dollhouse each night, for 17 nights, from 9-25 June.

Please note the venue is a 200-year-old building that is safe however it has no working lifts, only stairs to the upper floors and down to the basement. Visitors need to negotiate 3 flights of stairs.

Further details and background info on the Emergency Dollhouse can be found on Instagram @emergency_dollhouse or in the info hub sections of Humanitix or, after 30 April, at www.emergencydollhouse.com

Betwixt & Bewildered Things

"Betwixt & Bewildered Things"

Video projection of a performance art piece by emerging artist Holly Greaves. This piece will be showing at Hobart Brewing Co., 16 Evans st., 9-23 June.

Moments of subtly jolly anarchy, disorder and rebellion; in contrast with an urgency to mend, repair and rebuild. It is not certain when this story takes place, and the story never starts nor ends. It is subtle and strange the sweetness found in exploring. "Betwixt & Bewildered Things" will be shown in collaboration with the arts & music festival Dark Fringe.

This work was made on stolen land. We pay our respect to the indigenous communities of lutruwita/Tasmania, past, present and emerging; the rightful custodians of this land, whose sovereignty has never been ceded.
